Sappho Retrograde – Beatnik

Originally published on Heretical Oracles under the pen name Artemis.

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by
 madness, starving hysterical naked,
dragging themselves through the negro streets at
dawn looking for an angry fix,
angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient
heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the
machinery of night . . .

Put on your shades, light yourself a joint, and get in the fucking car.  Sappho is about to go retrograde in Sagittarius, and she is itching to be a wandering poet with a spiritual bent.  This makes this a very Sufi transit where you will want to give up everything for your higher vision and a higher love.  Here is the thing; this Sappho is the street poet who will type you up a poem for $5 and then move on to the next city because she is on a motherfuckin’ creative journey.  She knows that in order to write she must experience life and actually choose a path with her creativity – that she must be fully expressing herself at every turn.  She finds strength in her vulnerability, but she is still tough as nails.  In Sagitarrius, she is a motivator.  Her poetry has a rhyme and a reason, and she wants to get you fired the fuck up with her words.  You will want to actually connect to people – and sometimes this means moving away from your community into a community that understands you more.  On the negative side, it could also mean aimless wandering and going absolutely fucking nowhere until you end up back home with momma.

I kind of view Sappho as our lesbian counterpart to very much gender neutral Mercury.  When Mercury goes retrograde, it is actually a wonderful time for artists (especially writers).  The same thing applies to Sappho.  When she swings back in reverse, especially through a sign like Saggo, your creativity is set on fucking fire.  All that angst going on right now (fucking Pisces season) will be collected the next couple of weeks, and when Sappho goes retrograde on the 25th, you will know exactly what to say about the shit you have been going through.  Sagittarius is incredibly good at a few things;  higher thinking, philosophical musings, mouthing off facts/opinions, and running away.  This transit will make you want to run the fuck away from all of the hard feelings that will be coursing through your veins, but you need to dig your heels down and channel that shit into something useful – something expressive – something that makes people fucking think.

There are some really annoying bad aspects of Saggo – and that includes psuedo-intellectualism along with a music festival kid’s idea of spiritualism.  This transit will make little white girls feel like they need to get dreads, wear a shirt that says “gypsy” on it, and hop in an RV with a failed musician named Sam with a briefcase full of crystals to sell at bus depots.  Here’s the thing, kiddies, this is incredibly in-genuine spiritualism, and the glorification of nomadic life by young people who have no idea what that actually entails is quite scary.  You need to be strong to be on a journey like that – you need to be prepared – and your spiritualism needs to come from something other than a Jack Kerouac book and a few doses of DMT.  An artist’s duty is to be able to express the culture of their time, and Sappho in retrograde makes it a point that you review all of the shit you have gone through so that you can see how you must transform it in order to bring the community together in a deep and real way.

You can dress up like a wandering poet all you’d like, but if you aren’t actually doing the art – if you aren’t actually digging into the deepest corners of your happiness and despair to bring something real out – you are never going to reach illumination.  It is easy to think that wandering on some pilgrimage to literally nowhere will bring you enlightenment, but this is far from true.  In the end, Sappho was a philosopher/artist who brought like minded individuals into her community so that they could connect through art and love making, but this can get out of hand and taken advantage of.

This energy is needed in our communities more than ever right now.  Instead of running off thinking some other land is going to erase all your bad feels and instantly enlighten, remember this, “Wherever you go, there you are.”  So unless you are running toward something in particular (a real spiritual pilgrimage or Walkabout with spiritual mentors), and not from yourself, use this energy for higher thinking and not dashing.  But you must know that no matter how far you run, you can’t run from yourself, you can’t run from your head, so get that shit out of your head and onto some paper – or canvas – or into musical vibrations.  The world needs your higher thinking to be expressed, out loud, where everyone can hear it.  “Happiness is only real when shared,” Christopher McCandless said, and the same goes with pain.  You must acknowledge all that is inside of you, and let it be spoken, so that you may connect to those around you on a soul level.  Now that is the true spirit of Sagittarius – to connect at a divine level, not to run off and pretend you are a “gypsy princess” when you don’t even know how to pitch a proper tent.
